Health & Nutrition

Head Start and Early Head Start’s commitment to wellness embraces a comprehensive vision of health for children, families, and staff. The focus of Head Start and Early Head Start health services is to prevent health problems whenever possible by carefully addressing the needs of enrolled children and pregnant women. To accomplish this, Health and Nutrition Services staff ensure that, through collaboration among families, staff, and health professionals, health and developmental concerns among enrolled children and pregnant women are identified. Additionally, children and families are linked to an ongoing source of continuous, accessible care to meet their basic health needs. Healthy eating is a major component of a child’s overall well-being. At Head Start/Early Head Start the menu is designed in consultation with a registered dietician and includes healthy breakfasts, snacks and lunches in accordance with the Child and Adult Care Food Program regulations. The food is prepared and delivered by Food Works, a non-profit program of Middle Way. Classrooms located in MCCSC schools receive their lunch from the cafeteria. Family Support

We recruit and enroll all children and place them into classes. We can help families get connected to resources in the community, including mental health or counseling. Our Family Advocates can help families and children transfer to other programs or to new classes if they move as well as help families to work out transportation issues if a bus is not offered for your classroom. We are here to support the children and families and ensure that you receive the services and follow-up that you need. We will help families set goals and work to achieve them as well as following up on any child abuse or neglect concerns. We are here to advocate for the children and families.

Special Needs

Our Head Start programs are inclusive of all children. We strive to support the individual developmental skills of all children along with linking children with suspected or diagnosed special needs with service providers. Our program includes children with special needs such as communication, visual, hearing, cognitive, physical or emotional disabilities. In Early Head Start services are coordinated with the First Steps program and may be provided in the classroom or family home. For preschool children, services are provided at each Head Start site to meet the needs of identified children. Our local school systems (MCCSC & RBB) work with Head Start to provide these special education services to children 3 to 5.   For more information, contact the Special Needs Coordinator at 812-334-8350 ext. 213 or specnds@insccap.org .

Parent Involvement

We understand that parents are the first and most important teachers of their children. Staff welcome parents involvement in their children's learning and help them in making progress toward their educational, literacy and employment goals. Significant emphasis is placed on the involvement of parents in the administration of our program through parent committees in each classroom and the Council of Involved Families (a policy council).

Transportation

SCCAP Head Start provides bus transportation to and from home for the majority of the children attending our ½ day classes. Our goal is to efficiently and professionally provide transportation services to children and adults in a safe, caring and supportive environment. All of our drivers have a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with a School Bus “S” & Passenger “P” endorsement. They also have a Bus Driver Certification as well as CPR and 1st Aid. We also have Bus Monitors on each route. They go through a specific training program and are also certified in CPR and First Aid. All children get the opportunity to ride our buses whether it is on a route, screenings or field trips. We teach the children pedestrian and bus safety through classroom visits and on the bus ride. We also give parents and caregivers information on pedestrian and bus safety. This allows all off us to work together, as a team, to teach the children good safety practices.
